Marilyn Tavenner is a distinguished leader and public health advocate. Most recently, she served as Chief Executive Officer of America’s Health Insurance Plan. Ms. Tavenner previously served as the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) during the Obama Administration, where she led CMS’s work to implement the Affordable Care Act, and is credited with implementing programs that have significantly enhanced quality and reduced harm throughout the United States health care system.
Prior to her work at CMS, Ms. Tavenner served as the Secretary for Health and Human Services for the state of Virginia, where she oversaw 18,000 employees and a $9 billion annual budget to administer Medicaid, mental health, social services, public health, aging, disabilities agencies, and children’s services. A nurse by background and training, Ms. Tavenner enjoyed a 25-year career at Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), starting as a staff nurse and eventually culminating in her tenure as Group President of Outpatient Services, where she spearheaded the development of a national strategy for freestanding outpatient services, including physician recruitment and real estate development.
Ms. Tavenner has worked with many community and professional organizations, currently serving on the Board at Virginia Commonwealth University and previously serving as board member of the American Hospital Association, President of the Virginia Hospital Association, Chairperson of the Chesterfield Business Council, and lifelong member of the Rotary Club.
Ms. Tavenner received her undergraduate degree and her Master in Health Administration from the Virginia Commonwealth University.
