New England Baptist Orthopedics Program Brings Nationally Recognized Approach to Orthopedic Care to Local Communities

Plymouth, MA – As part of its foundational mission to expand access to extraordinary care in local communities, Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) today announced a new initiative that will bring highly specialized and nationally recognized models of orthopedic care developed by New England Baptist Hospital to its community hospital in Plymouth.

Beginning this month, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth (BID Plymouth) will offer the New England Baptist Hospital model of care for joint replacement surgery on the hip, knee, shoulder, as well as spine surgery. In December of 2019, Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport and Beverly Hospital in Beverly also adopted the New England Baptist protocols. All the hospitals are part of the Beth Israel Lahey Health system.

“The extension of the nationally recognized, data-driven and patient-centered model of care that New England Baptist Hospital is known for will benefit residents of Plymouth and the surrounding communities, providing access to care closer to where they work and live,” said Kevin Tabb, MD, president and CEO of Beth Israel Lahey Health. “Expanding access to extraordinary care in our communities, meeting our patients where they are, is fundamental to who we are at Beth Israel Lahey Health.”

BID Plymouth will build on its already strong orthopedics programs by implementing a number of protocols that have been shown to improve outcomes, speed recovery, limit complications, improve patient experience of care and assure consistency of clinical practice. Key areas of focus include enhanced screening and pre-surgery planning, pre-surgical physical therapy planning and patient education; improved care coordination across multi-disciplinary care teams; and data-driven approaches to recovery, including early ambulation.

“This collaboration between Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth and New England Baptist Orthopedics builds upon our excellent orthopedics program and will in turn take it to new heights,” said Kevin Coughlin, president of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth. “This will be transformational for our patients experiencing joint and back pain in Plymouth and surrounding towns.”

David Passafaro, president of New England Baptist Hospital, added, “Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth offers excellent orthopedic care, through a deeply committed care team. We are proud to join together to enhance the services provided to patients through the New England Baptist Orthopedic Program.”
